The difficulty in writing a training blog comes from trying to make the blog easy to read while logging all the necessary information. It is very difficult to escape the trap of "... I did this at this speed on and then on this day I did this... blah, blah , blah." I read my entry from last week and I realised that I had basically just copied the information from my training journal into my blog. I can assume, from how bored I got reading it, that not many other readers found it all that entertaining. So for this entry I am going to try and remember the feelings, the struggles and the the stupid things I did so as to try and include you fully into my training. If its shit then please tell me...
Monday I realised this morning that there is one thing I truly hate and that is the sound of an alarm breaking into your dreams with the realisation that I now get to pull on tights and head out for a run at 6am... The run was really good and I noticed that my heart rate was now hitting 165, a whole 10 bpm less than the last week, this means that I am getting fitter and fitter quicker!! Awesome!! I did my 30 mins and got home feeling great and almost ready for work, but then again how ready can you feel for work? I was meant to swim this evening however we had a friend round for dinner and so after careful consultation with the swimming pool timetable I rescheduled for tomorrow night.
Tuesday, Waking up early for me is quite a mission, however I do it because I have a goal, however my girlfriend and housemate dont share the same idea and so I dont think its fair to jump on my bike at 6 in the morning and get my turbo wound up... It would definetly make them wake up on the wrong side of th ebed and so I decided to try out the gym at work... I convinced my mate Jon to join me at lunch time in the gym.
I jumped on the spinning bike and then promptly jumped off and had to adjust it and climb back on... I did repeat this process about 4 times untl I felt comfortable and 10 minutes had passed, by now Jon had worked up a sweat from exercising and I had worked up a sweat... from setting up the bike... The 30 minutes I spent on the bike was spent with my heart rate in the 179's, which was too high, however I felt like it was a good workout. I did have to clean up an ocean of sweat off the gym floor but I felt like it was the mark of a good workout. I then headed out for a quick few laps of the car park and reluctantly went back to work...
The pool session was great, no actually it was awesome. I tried to concentrate on the catch and I could feel my arm muscles working overtime. I felt like I got tireder sooner and wanted to stop again after about halfway, however I persevered and by the time I had finished I had shaved 15 minutes off my previous time for 2.5kms. I went to bed feeling good and looking forward to my rest day.
Wednesday Rest Day... whoo hoo
Thursday, My rest day felt like a distant memory when the alarm went off and I headed off to work to hit the gym. I remembered the settings on the spinning bike and so managed to save myself 10 minutes of phaffing and got on with the session. I knocked out 30 minutes at a faitly high heart rate and then dragged myself to work.
I decided that tonight would be a good night to try out the OxfordTri track session and it was good to meet up with the club members who I hadnt seen since our drunken awards night. It was a good session, however I was unsure about how it would help my ironman prep. I have since found that I should avoid the track until after the first 10 weeks of my training. It was great to be on a track and I do look forward to getting there again when my training allows.
Friday, Its amazing how when you get into the swing of training, you get annoyed with people that get in your way. This was the case at the swimming pool tonight. The session was meant to start at 9 and naturally I was there as eager as ever and at the gate at 9 sharp and it was only at 9:05 that they opened the gates. Now that doesnt sound so bad, however when the session is only an hour long you need as many minutes as possible. It was a really tough session as I my set was broken into long segments of 300 and 400 metres. I had eaten about 2 hours before and I felt bloated and heavy, I also took on loads of water... When they kicked us out of the pool, I had only swum 2.3kms yet I had done it in 55 minutes which means that if I had been able to do the final 200m I would have done it in a little over an hour... I am getting quicker...YES.
Saturday, I went out for my run and about 20 minutes into the hour long session I slipped or tripped on a little stone and I felt the most excruciating pain run down my left leg. Naturally I was far away from home and it took me about 45 minutes to hobble home in agaony. I climbed into an ice cold bath and luckily everyone as out and so no-one heard me screaming as my gentlemanly region hit the cold water... I spent the rest of the day in compression socks with my leg up... rough day.
Sunday, My leg was still sore this morning and so after testing it on the turbo I decided to pass on the cycle I had planned and just rest the leg. I still have 28 weeks left and cant afford to injure myself long term. It's really difficult to think this but I think its all part of the mental training that one goes through on the road to Ironman.
So week 2 in numbers
kms covered - unfortunately I wasn't able to record my mileage this week
5:03:29 time spent exercising
... and I survived (kinda), so bring on week 3
