Week 4

24/01/11 - 29/01/11

I am sat at work writing this, the time is 09:37 and I have been at work for 2 hours already and have still got 11 hours left...awesome!!

This week was not a great week, it started out great and then fizzled out pathetically. I have realised that I need warmer clothing as I am spending longer out in the cold and after about an hour my warm layers are just not warm anymore... I also need to be stricter with my time, and maybe more assertive at work.

This week there is no point in writing per day as I notched up a measly 3:45:00 worth of exercise time and only covered 41.5kms. I am not sure what went wrong as on Tuesday I did a strength session in the gym after work, then I cranked out an hour on the indoor trainer at my prescribed heart rate and then went for a half hour run. I felt fantastic and enthusiastic and strong.

I chilled on the Wednesday with my rest day and then on Thursday it all started going wrong. I started a session on the indoor trainer and I couldn't get my heart rate up without massive effort, a side effect of getting fitter I think, and when I did get it up I couldn't maintain the pace. Everything was wrong, I couldn't get comfortable on the saddle or on the bars, my feet went numb very quickly, my trainer started making strange noises and after 45 minutes I just couldn't hack it anymore and so like a coward I slipped off to the bathroom and had a bath...with bubbles!!!

Friday was going to be the day I made up for Thursday, as I had the day off work, yet when I bent down to put my shoes on I nearly passed out. I felt like I was going to throw up and so dashed for the bathroom and on the way I nearly fell over as I felt as dizzy as if I had just stepped of a roundabout at the park...not good. I didn't throw up but as I sat quietly sipping a glass of water waiting for the awful sensations to pass I realised that I probably shouldn't risk going for a ride if I could barely stand up. I ended up sleeping for a large part of the day and felt better by the evening. Saturday was just plain cold and I chickened out of that... I did however manage to fit in a eye check and buy a new pair of glasses, return some unwanted goods and get the monthly shopping done...Yay :-/

So this pathetic week in numbers...again
time spent exercising - 03:45:00
distance covered - 41.5kms

Next week is going to be tough as I am working all wierd hours, however I have drawn up spreadsheet of hours to try and get my 8 hours of training in...bring it on.

Week 3

17/01/11 - 23/01/11

This was one of those weeks where my juggling skills had to be sharp, it was going to be a crazy week at work and I was also not running this week and that meant trying to change the plan to maintain the hours without the running. I succeeded and ended up doing a little more. I am beginning to feel like I am getting into shape and that the exercise is paying off, I am still struggling with trying to fit in all the sessions with work and home life and my main concern is for when the hours start to increase even more...

Monday I substituted the planned run for a cycling session and did this on my turbo trainer in the evening, I was also meant to be swimming however as I had a crazy early start at work I had to shift the swim to the following day. The bike session went well but one of the things I have begun to realise is that as I slowly start to get fitter so it requires more effort to get my heart rate to 155bpm. This bike session was not that great a success as I really struggled to get my heart rate above 130 and this was linkied to the slight pain in my leg still... I did manage to do 45 minutes at about 125-130bpm and in the end I felt that it was best for the leg. I managed to get through the boredom of indoor training by watching episodes of 'The Big Bang Theory' on DVD.

Tuesday was meant to be a brick session but my leg was still aching a little bit so I skipped that and only did the swimming as originally planned. Work ran late and it ended up being a 12 and a half hour day and so I raced home, grabbed my swim stuff and shot off for the pool. I had a fantastic swim, which was just a straight 2.5kms, and managed to knock it on the head in 58 minutes. That was so amazing, considering that my first 2.5 had taken me 25 minutes. I was exhausted, a little nauseous but so ecstatic. I am really trying to concentrate on my stroke and I have noticed that when I get tired it all goes out the window and I even start to struggle with my breathing. Something to work on.

Wednesday, ah the rest day, didn't feel I needed it so much as the weekend hadn't been very trying at all but it had been a couple of heavy days at work so decided to relax anyway.

Thursday I got to go into work late and so I thought I would try a strength training session in the gym at work... Now I am still trying to figure out if this was a good idea as even today (Sunday) some parts of my arms hurt. I followed a plan in my Iron Bible which saw me do Leg Presses, Lat Pull Downs, Leg Extensions, Chest Presses, Bicep Curls, Calf Raises, Shoulder Presses and Seated Rows. I did a 15 minute warm up on the crosstrainer and again as a cool down. Its been easily 4 years since I did any weights and I am just glad that everyone else was at work while I tried to figure all the machines out.

In the evening I then managed an hour on the turbo trainer and this time I watched Lance Armstrongs 7th tour de france win on DVD and I quite easily managed to get my heart rate into the 155's, however I did get really drawn into the movie and at one point I did realise that I was trying to cycle fast enough to keep up with all the cyclists... not clever or even possible... I felt knackered at the end of this session and the vibrations through my saddle left me feeling a little tender and uncomfortable for a little while after I got off the bike...

Friday was supposed to be my first swim session with the club and I had packed all my stuff, made sure I had the right money and had even arranged to leave work a little early to make sure I would make the 6pm start... well, that didnt happen. I ended up having to stay at work till 6:15 which was a little annoying yet wasn't the end of the world as the Leisure Centre swim session started at 9 and I would just go to that. I got into my car and as I turned out of the well lit car park at work and onto a very dark unlit road I noticed that my lights weren't performing very well and what I really mean is that i had no lights...AT ALL. I managed to get myself back to work and eventually a friend, Matt, arrived at work with a new main fuse for the headlights, however when I removed the old one it was still intact...what to do? So I managed through some wierd contortions to remove a bulb and that bulb was dead. It turned out that both bulbs had in fact blown and needed replacing luckily I had a bulb as did Matt and eventually after a little bit of swearing and grazed hands I had 2 headlights again... only it was 9:20 and that meant no swimming for me...

Saturday I was determined to make up for the lost workouts during the week and headed off on my bike into a very cold Oxford day. I made my way through town, managed to avoid being ploughed down by 2 cars in the centre of town and headed into the country. The country is great in that its quite, very few cars and so very peaceful, the one thing it does have is very muddy roads. I will upload a photo of my poor bike after its county road expedition. It was fantastic to get out after mainly riding inside and the ride felt fantastic, although I did notice myself getting tired in the lat 10kms, which means work is needed on the bike. One thing I did realise is the perils of having a white bike in the english winter...

In the evening I realised that I had a swim session to make up and upon consultation of the timetable for the leisure centre I saw that a session was due to start in 5 minutes time, so after a quick hunt around for my swim stuff, then the realisation that it was all in my bag still from Friday, I was off to the pool. It was nice and quite except for the whale bobbing in the fast lane for a little while until she realised that it really was the fast lane and not for her. I managed to finish my session just as the rather pudgy 'lifeguard' told me that the pool was now closing. I was feeling a little tired by the time I got home and this time didn't attract the attention of the police...

Sunday was cold and slightly windy and I was feeling knackered. It was a real struggle to get out today and my legs just werent there at all during the ride to such a point that I cut my route short and just headed home. I started to feel slightly dozy and really cold and I think that I might have started getting slightly hypothermic. I wished that I had brought my windproof jacket as the cold was mainly due to the wind. When I got home I realised that I had packed it, like I do on every ride, yet for some reason just didn't remember. I did end up with same average speed as Saturday which means that either I took it too easy on Saturday or I just managed to keep the speed up on Sunday... I was really glad to get home and after washing my bike for the second time in one weekend I guzzled down a cup of coffee and a large bowl of left-over rissotto and then headed for the bath.

Another week done and dusted and even with no running I still managed to do my 8 hours as required.

So week 3 in numbers
122.3kms covered
8:50:00 time spent exercising
... and I survived, so bring on week 4

Week 2

10/01/11 - 16/01/11

The difficulty in writing a training blog comes from trying to make the blog easy to read while logging all the necessary information. It is very difficult to escape the trap of  "... I did this at this speed on and then on this day I did this... blah, blah , blah." I read my entry from last week and I realised that I had basically just copied the information from my training journal into my blog. I can assume, from how bored I got reading it, that not many other readers found it all that entertaining. So for this entry I am going to try and remember the feelings, the struggles and the the stupid things I did so as to try and include you fully into my training. If its shit then please tell me...

Monday I realised this morning that there is one thing I truly hate and that is the sound of an alarm breaking into your dreams with the realisation that I now get to pull on tights and head out for a run at 6am... The run was really good and I noticed that my heart rate was now hitting 165, a whole 10 bpm less than the last week, this means that I am getting fitter and fitter quicker!! Awesome!! I did my 30 mins and got home feeling great and almost ready for work, but then again how ready can you feel for work? I was meant to  swim this evening however we had a friend round for dinner and so after careful consultation with the swimming pool timetable I rescheduled for tomorrow night.

Tuesday, Waking up early for me is quite a mission, however I do it because I have a goal, however my girlfriend and housemate dont share the same idea and so I dont think its fair to jump on my bike at 6 in the morning and get my turbo wound up... It would definetly make them wake up on the wrong side of th ebed and so I decided to try out the gym at work... I convinced my mate Jon to join me at lunch time in the gym.

I jumped on the spinning bike and then promptly jumped off and had to adjust it and climb back on... I did repeat this process about 4 times untl I felt comfortable and 10 minutes had passed, by now Jon had worked up a sweat from exercising and I had worked up a sweat... from setting up the bike...  The 30 minutes I spent on the bike was spent with my heart rate in the 179's, which was too high, however I felt like it was a good workout. I did have to clean up an ocean of sweat off the gym floor but I felt like it was the mark of a good workout. I then headed out for a quick few laps of the car park and reluctantly went back to work...

The pool session was great, no actually it was awesome. I tried to concentrate on the catch and I could feel my arm muscles working overtime. I felt like I got tireder sooner and wanted to stop again after about halfway, however I persevered and by the time I had finished I had shaved 15 minutes off my previous time for 2.5kms. I went to bed feeling good and looking forward to my rest day.

Wednesday Rest Day... whoo hoo

Thursday, My rest day felt like a distant memory when the alarm went off and I headed off to work to hit the gym. I remembered the settings on the spinning bike and so managed to save myself 10 minutes of phaffing and got on with the session. I knocked out 30 minutes at a faitly high heart rate and then dragged myself to work.

I decided that tonight would be a good night to try out the OxfordTri track session and it was good to meet up with the club members who I hadnt seen since our drunken awards night. It was a good session, however I was unsure about how it would help my ironman prep. I have since found that I should avoid the track until after the first 10 weeks of my training. It was great to be on a track and I do look forward to getting there again when my training allows.

Friday, Its amazing how when you get into the swing of training, you get annoyed with people that get in your way. This was the case at the swimming pool tonight. The session was meant to start at 9 and naturally I was there as eager as ever and at the gate at 9 sharp and it was only at 9:05 that they opened the gates. Now that doesnt sound so bad, however when the session is only an hour long you need as many minutes as possible. It was a really tough session as I my set was broken into long segments of 300 and 400 metres. I had eaten about 2 hours before and I felt bloated and heavy, I also took on loads of water... When they kicked us out of the pool, I had only swum 2.3kms yet I had done it in 55 minutes which means that if I had been able to do the final 200m I would have done it in a little over an hour... I am getting quicker...YES.

Saturday, I went out for my run and about 20 minutes into the hour long session I slipped or tripped on a little stone and I felt the most excruciating pain run down my left leg. Naturally I was far away from home and it took me about 45 minutes to hobble home in agaony. I climbed into an ice cold bath and luckily everyone as out and so no-one heard me screaming as my gentlemanly region hit the cold water... I spent the rest of the day in compression socks with my leg up... rough day.

Sunday, My leg was still sore this morning and so after testing it on the turbo I decided to pass on the cycle I had planned and just rest the leg. I still have 28 weeks left and cant afford to injure myself long term. It's really difficult to think this but I think its all part of the mental training that one goes through on the road to Ironman.

So week 2 in numbers
kms covered - unfortunately I wasn't able to record my mileage this week
5:03:29 time spent exercising
... and I survived (kinda), so bring on week 3

Sunday 9 January 2011

Week 1

03/01/11 - 09/01/11

This week has been exhausting, not only did I start my training regime but I also went back to work after the Christmas holidays.

Monday started with a 30 min run and for this run I was joined by Laura. The run was  a mix of running and walking and although we only did 3.24km it was a nice way to ease into exercising again. I didn't have any pain or any form of struggle with breathing. I finished the run feeling fresh and energised. The evening session was down at the Local Leisure Centre and I completed the 2.5km swimming set in a time of approximately 1:25:00. The session was broken down into lengths at 60%, 70% and 80% effort. I got about halfway through the session when my arms started to burn and I could feel I was getting tired, I wanted to stop and get out, I told myself I would do 1 more length and then after that I did 1 more and so on until I had actually finished all 2.5kms. It was triumph for me, mentally and physically.

Tuesday was a brick session, and for those not in the know, a brick session is when you do one session immediately after another. I spent 30 minutes on my bike mounted on the turbo trainer indoors and then went straight into a 15 minute run. It wasn't particularly stressing but it is a good session for getting used to running straight off the bike. I didn't have any effects from Mondays session yet but I had a feeling that I would feel it on Wednesday.

Wednesday  was a rest day. I was feeling the results of the previous 2 days sessions but nothing unbearable.

Thursday was awful... I had to start work at 7:30 and I needed to fit in a 30 minute run before that and so at 5:30 my alarm went off. I had tried to soak oats in orange juice through the night so that I could have a quick breakfast... Not a Good Plan!! I thn quickly cooked up some oats and had a couple of spoonfuls, pulled on my tights and warm top and headed out into the crisp morning air. It was tough as my legs were hurting from Monday and Tuesdays sessions and not having had enough to drink or eat I found that I ran out of energy very quickly. I managed 27:48:95 and in that time ran 4.81kms. Work dragged on and when I got home the last thing I wanted was to ride for 30 minutes, however once I was on the bike the 30 minutes flew by and I retreated thankfully to the shower. I was not looking forward to Friday as I had another 2.5kms of swimming to do and as I had a birthday dinner to get to it had to be done in the morning. I climbed into bed and decided that I had better listen to my body which was screaming insults at me and chose not to set my alarm and instead try squeeze in a shortened swim session before dinner.

Friday ended up being a rest day, and as disappointed I felt in myself I also felt like I had done the right thing as the last thin I wanted was to burn myself out in my first week. Now some of you may think I did the wrong thing but on Saturday I knew I had done the right thing.

Saturday rolled in and it was the first long run, however I had transferred the information incorrectly to my journal and instead of a 45 minute session I headed out with a hour long run in mind. Unfortunately I took a wrong turn and ended up on a long route. This was really tough as the legs were still very sore and it became a run/walk session that lasted 1:18:50 and in that time clocked up 10.33kms. I was tired at the end and a mid afternoon nap was just the ticket for recovery.

Sunday and I was on the bike. I decided that an easy way to get bike fit better was to head out on a rusty squeaky mountain bike. It was an hour long ride planned yet I ended up riding for 1:16:12 and managed 26.64kms. The ride was easy enough and it helped spin the hurt out of the legs. I am going to carry on training on the mountain bike but I am going to put my clipless pedals on as I don't want to develop any bad pedalling technique.

So week 1 in number
72.52kms covered
6:08:46 time spent exercising
... and I survived, so bring on week 2

The training plan

My training plan is based on a training plan in the book, Be Iron Fit by Don Fink. I started off thinking of doing the Just Finish Programme, however as most of you who know me would know, that just didn't seem like enough for me...

And so now I am training based on the Competitive Programme. This training plan starts on 6 hours in Week 1 and hits 20 hours in Week 27. I am amending the training plan according to the OxfordTri training sessions and then again according to my fluctuating work hours. There are various ways that I can get around these 'hurdles' and some of these ways would include commuting by bike and using the gym facilities at work.

I have a Training Journal and at the end of the week I will post about how the week went, unless I feel strongly about a session and then there might be mid-week posts. I will not be recording what I eat or counting calories as once I hit double figures in my training hours I will be eating like a machine. I am trying to stop snacking and drinking alcohol and that is mostly the changes to my diet, apart from eating healthier.

The rest will be week by sweaty exhausting week...

I hope you (whoever you may be) enjoys it, please drop comments as it will be nice to get some feedback and motivation.
